What determines someone’s opportunities in life?

I was reading a book about North Korea which claimed “in North Korea all of your opportunities are determined by your caste,” (Yeonmi Park, Maryanne Vollers, In Order to Live). While that is an extreme example, it is true that the circumstances you are born do have an impact on the opportunities before you.
