A Body or a Bag of Body Parts

A Wholly Unusual October Reflection

Ah, October. The month when it’s totally acceptable for skeletons to roam the streets. I’ve got a pastor friend (Rich) who quips around this time of year that the Church should be a living, breathing body of Christ, rather than just a random collection of limbs and organs tossed in a bag. There’s a difference between a body and a bag of body parts…

Let’s dive into that imagery a bit more. Ever feel like Sunday services are kinda like just shoving all of us into a bag and shaking it up? The church building shouldn’t just be a storage unit for the faithful. It’s supposed to be the lifeblood of the community.

Look, being a miscellaneous part in this spiritual grab bag isn’t the best way to experience your faith journey. We’re supposed to be more than seat warmers come Sunday morning. We each have a role, a niche, a sweet spot. And no, I’m not talking about landing that coveted seat at the end of the row.

So, as we say goodbye to the spookiness of October and welcome the crispness of November, maybe it’s time to brush off the cobwebs and make a committed dive into a more unified church experience. Let’s not be that bag of mixed parts.

True magic doesn’t come from the ghosts and ghouls of October. It’s in the shared laughter, the camaraderie, the collective effort to make a difference. When we transform from a jumbled mess into a cohesive unit, we shift from a B-horror movie plot to a feel-good, heartwarming story.

So let’s make this season count. Let’s team up — flesh, bone, and all — and truly become a meaningful, impactful part of the body of Christ. Who knows, achieving that level of unity might just be sweeter than hoarding all the Halloween candy in the block.
